Sega has categorically gunned down recent rumours suggesting that it is set to return to the console market.

Whispers of the move arose online last week, when the publisher was said to have signed a deal with a UK-based 3D hardware manufacturer.

However, when speaking to CVG at E3 today, Sega West president Mike Hayes laughed off the suggestions.

When we asked if there was anything in the rumours, he replied:

"Absolutely not. We're a software company. We certainly won't be getting back into hardware, that's for sure."

Oh well. At least you'll be able to play plenty of old Dreamcast games over the next year.

Sega once dominated the hardware market with models such as the MegaDrive and Master System. But less successful later consoles - such as Sega Saturn and Dreamcast itself - threatened to ruin the firm.

It's rebirth as a leading software company certainly shows no signs of slowing down - with top notch titles such as Vanquish, Total War: Shogun 2 and Sonic Colours out in force on E3 2010's show floor.
