The release of AmigaOS 4 proves one thing: you can't keep a good platform down.

But is AmigaOS merely a fun hobby OS to play around with, or does it offer real value? My answer is that it is a little of both. As a fan of alternative platforms, you won't find many that are more esoteric than AmigaOS. But beyond being different for the sake of being different, OS4 provides something more interesting: a chance to experience a whole new way of computing.

[...]Still, all this fun is a completely moot point if there is no new hardware available to run OS4 on. While I like my Micro AmigaOne, and am considering getting one of the new processor upgrade cards for it at some point, I would very much like to run the OS on newer and faster hardware. While a port to x86 processors would be nice, I don't think it is all that necessary. As long as PPC hardware is available, it is still probably the best choice for new Amigas. With the OS just having completed its transition to PPC, it is a little too early for an Intel switch, although I can see such a thing happening a few years down the road.
