After the last announcement of a hard drive built of 40GB platters, namely WD1200BB, which took place in October 2001, there has been a long period of calm for "HDD testers". It's a known fact that calm like that is usually followed by a storm. There usually is a lull before the battle at war, and the hard drive manufacturers (and not only them) are actually at war ("blood bath", as some IBM official called it). And every war has its casualties. Quantum and Fujitsu were among them, IBM remaining on the brink. The survivors began a new round of war activities in the spring with the new weapon: 60GB platters. End of May Samsung shot forth its V60, end of June Seagate and Western Digital fired with 7,200 caliber. But the last and biggest combatant, Maxtor, kept silent. No, Maxtor is not dead and feels just excellent. All the silence was of a marketing nature. The answer was uttered and everyone understood who was the number one in hard disk drive making race. Maxtor not only mastered the record-breaking 80GB platters, but also rolled out no less than four families of new hard drives! Fireball 3 @ x-bit labs
