Nr 27. (22.08.2003):
1.45 ALERT: Mod-makers take note

1.45 patch will be available soon. If you've played the Secret Weapons demo, you're already aware of some of the fixes that have been implemented.

One fix has implications for mod-makers. If you have not already done the following, you will need to update your mod in order to make it work with 1.45 and subsequent patches. In order to work, you must modify the following line:

game.setmapid "bf1942"

....where bf1942 is changed to reflect your mod name. This line is found in the init.con file found in the menu folder for each map included with your mod.

Example

The path in an unpacked level is: ...\Mods\BF1942\Archives\BF1942\Levels\bf1942\levels\Battle_of_Britain\Menu\init.con.

We have attempted to minimize all impacts that patches have on the mod community, and any that do occur are unavoidable in order to deliver a better gaming experience. We hope by providing this information before the patch is released, you can update your mods accordingly. We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause.
Nr 26. (27.06.2003):
We have a couple of updates for you today Men! First is an update on the Linux Server. Second is a newly featured Secret Weapon.

Linux Server Update
The open beta v.7 of the BF1942 dedicated Linux server is available on the usual distribution site: http://bf1942.lightcubed.com. Or you can grab it right here from our own download page.

This release is an incremental update to the earlier release and you will need both to install the server. To install the update, change directory to the directory where your bf1942 game is located and untar the update file, this will overwrite the files that need to be updated.

Filename: bf1942_lnxded-1.4-ob7up.tar.bz2
MD5 sums: 5df2e3719104ac7ee44a1f4b26a56784 bf1942_lnxded.dynamic
afbd28c4f02a8a82387ca2e557dd8805 bf1942_lnxded.static
Version: BF1942 (Ver:52283/Wed Jun 25 16:29:27 CEST 2003)
Release date: 2003-06-25
Release status: Pure bug fix release for OB6.
Comment: Shipped with symbol table intact to produce stack traces.

Changes:

* Linked with dynamic curses to avoid SIGILL on Intel machines.
* Hostname lookup failure no longer a fatal error.
* Removed nearly all references to gettimeofday()--uses RDTSC instead.
* Timing code around main loop reworked.
* Compiled with i586 optimizations instead of i686.
* game.listPlayers format now includes IP address again.
* Fixed remote console hanging the game.
* Added server name to status monitor.
* Allows changing of GameSpy/ASE ports via ServerSettings.con.
* Fixed start.sh script for ldds that write message to stderr. Compiled with different optimization settings to improve performance.
* The game.sayAll console command is now available.
* game.listPlayers gives ip addresses in the correct order.
* The status monitor leaves more room for the server name.
* Added frame simulation stats to status monitor for beta purposes.

Known issues:

* There doesn't seem to be a way to change the ASE port with our current copy of the ASE SDK. It will always bind to port 14690.
* A small pause can be observed in the server while loading, this is normal and needed by the TSC calibration code.
* The server can use a lot of CPU running under certain Linux kernels. This can be avoided by recompiling the kernel removing unused features, but it is not yet clear what is causing the bug.
* SMP kernels can cause the server to use a lot more CPU than what it it really should be using; the only known workaround is to use a non-SMP kernel. People are also reporting success with the development kernels (the 2.5.x series), which is only recommended for the daring.
It has come to our attention that a non-final version of the 1.4 patch has surfaced on the web. Please note that this is NOT the final version of 1.4, and it WILL NOT be compatible with the final version of 1.4. We strongly recommend that you do not install it. If you have installed it, our suggestion is that you reinstall BF 1942.
Ten Hut Soldiers!

Another E3 is over. And while the floor of the LA Convention Center was a battlefield of products this year, when all was said and done, and the dust cleared -- Battlefield 1942 was still king of the hill when it comes to multiplayer action!

Now let's get back to business -- this week we're giving you another sneak peek at the upcoming 1.4 patch. First, let's take a look at what we've already told you about the patch:

* Tank Repair exploit - tanks will no longer be able to make repairs in the airplane hanger.
* Improved voting UI - the voting interface has been improved.
* Cheats - we will be implementing features to address many of the cheats currently being seen in BF1942 games.
* Linux Server
* Two new guns -- The DP 1928 - Japanese Assault rifle and the Type 99 - Russian Assault rifle.

Here are more features that you can look forward to in the 1.4 patch:

1. New and improved sounds in 1st person view, such as increased volume of impacts, louder grenade explosions and a new sound for the Axis Assault rifle STG44.
2. Scoreboard now shows current server's name, IP address and map name. Scoreboard also shows each player's ID number, which is used for creating your buddy list/voting to kick a player.
3. Rear gunner for Stuka/SBD/Ai-chi-val now has crosshair.
4. Incremental patching will be available for clients (smaller 1.31-1.4 download)
5. Added a new blood effect for additional feedback when you are hitting another soldier.
6. Much, much more.

Another feature of 1.4 that we'd like to explain is the "Content Check" option.

When content check is turned on by the server admin (default setting in the dedicated server front end), only players with completely clean BF 1942 installs will be able to play on the server. When content check is turned off by the server admin, anyone can join the server, whether they are running the merciless mod, or have have Desert Combat installed.

Currently, server admins will not be able to run content check servers that have user created maps/mods installed. If they do, clients will not be able to connect to those servers, regardless of whether or not they have the same maps/mods installed as the server.

Many of you have also expressed concerns that you won't be able to play on any official EA servers because of the content check feature. Here's some good news for you - with the 1.4 patch we are changing the configs of all of our EA servers, and we WILL be running some non content check servers. This will be evident in the server name. For example we may have "Pure Coral Sea Only" servers and "Non Pure Coral Sea Only" servers (Pure Coral Sea Only = Content Check Coral Sea Server -- Non Pure Coral Sea Only = Non Content Check Coral Sea Server)

When can I download this wonderful patch? The answer is soon. We're entering our final testing phases today. Once we are confident that there are no major outstanding issues that are caused by the patch, we'll release it.

That covers this week's update - stay tuned next Friday for another Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of World War II weapon feature, and a detailed list of our new official server configs that will release with the 1.4 patch!

Now get back out there on the Battlefield soldier!

Nr 22. (02.05.2003)
Featured Vehicle: German Sturmmorser Tiger (Sturmtiger)

When the Germans needed a powerful field vehicle to destroy fortified positions, the idea to merge a heavy 38cm naval mortar (used to bust submarines) with a Tiger I tank chassis gave birth to the Sturmtiger.

The short-barreled mortar projector fired a huge 761 lb shell that traveled up to 18,000 feet. Even more unique, the shell was a gas-propelled rocket that had to be inserted into the barrel by a crane that was attached to the vehicle. In October of 1943, the first prototype was shown and demonstrated while Adolph Hitler and staff looked on.

Using damaged Tiger I tanks to create the vehicle since German forces couldn't spare new tanks, the Sturmtiger's were manufactured and put to use in the war, if only for a brief period.

Watch out for this rolling bunker buster.

Technical Stats:
Armament: 1 - 38cm (15") Mirser StuM RW6 1 L/5.4 mortar projector
Engine: Maybach, HL 230 P45, V-12, gas, 700 hp
Speed: 25 mph
Range: 75 miles
Crew: 5
Weight: 68 tons

Stay tuned for another featured vehicle (and screenshots) next week!
Soldiers,

With the recent announcement of the 1.4 patch and our aggressive stance against cheating, some misconceptions about the patch were made. We’d like to take this time to clear a few things up, and make a special announcement.

First and foremost, server side mods will not be killed with the 1.4 patch. This means that mods like Desert Combat will continue to function as they have in the past. Secondly, we’ve listened to all of the concerned players who don’t want to lose their favorite client side mods, like the merciless mod. To help make Battlefield 1942 a great experience for everyone, DICE and EA have come up with a solution that should work for all players. In the 1.4 patch, there will be a server side option regarding content checks. When this option is turned on by the server admin, players who are using client side mods will not be able to connect to the server. When this option is turned off, players can join the server with any of the client side mods that they have. We feel that this option provides support for both players that enjoy their client side mods (merciless mod), and those that want to ensure everyone in the game is playing with the same skins/crosshairs etc.

Stay tuned for more exclusive details about another Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII vehicle, and the rest of the latest Battlefield 1942 franchise happenings!

Now move out Soldier!
Nr 20:
We wanted to take a moment and bring everyone up to speed on the next Battlefield 1942 patch, 1.4. With this patch, we're working on features and fixes that will address gameplay and performance issues. We're working hard on the patch, and as usual, we will not report a release date until we are 100% certain we can hit it.
Fixes and Features in 1.4 include:
* Tank Repair exploit - tanks will no longer be able to repair in the airplane hanger.

* Improved voting GUI - the voting interface has been improved.
* Cheats - we will be implementing features which address many of the cheats currently being seen in BF1942 games.
* Linux Server.
* Two new guns being added: The DP 1928 - Japanese Assault rifle and the Type 99 - Russian Assault rifle.

A note on cheating and exploits -- we've all seen how cheating can destroy the gameplay experience for everyone. EA and DICE take cheating seriously and we are taking an aggressive stance in preventing exploits which allow people to cheat. The biggest source of all BF cheats and exploits are client-side modifications. With the release of patch 1.4, we are disabling all client-side mods. Unfortunately, this means that the client side mods that aren't used for cheating will also be affected. DICE and EA have spent the past few months trying to engineer a solution which allows client-side mods to work while stopping the cheats. Ultimately it proved impossible to do so in such a way that prevented future client side mods from opening up new methods of cheating and exploitation. However, this doesn't mean that all mods are unusable. By making the mods into full server-side mods (Desert Combat for example), everyone can experience the cool factor that these mods offer.
And now on to this week's featured vehicle from the upcoming release of the Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII expansion pack.
Featured Vehicle: Horten Ho 229(Equipped with 30 mm machine guns and missiles)
click to enlarge click to enlarge

The Horten brothers, Reimar and Walter, originally conceived the Ho 229 as a single-seat flying wing fighter. Although early iterations had a plywood shell, later examples were covered in a cloth that absorbed the radar waves that hit the plane. That feature combined with a very narrow profile, helped to create what appears to be the world's first stealth aircraft.
Prior to the addition of twin Jumo 004B turbojets on the Ho 229, the HIX V1 prototype was built as a glider and flew for the first time in March of 1944. The HIX V2 vehicle (turbojets included) flew for the first time in late December of 1944. While the HIX V2 crashed during a test flight in February of 1945, the craft was still given the green light for production.
But the Ho 229's production was short lived and came to an abrupt end when U.S. forces overran the research facility in late March of 1945. When the U.S. took the Gotha factory, it is rumored that U.S. forces found a partially constructed two-seat version of the Ho 229. It is that two-seater version that we've chosen to recreate in Secret Weapons.
Technical Stats:
Engine: 2 x Jumo 004B turbojets
Max. thrust: 1983 lb.
Wing span: 54 ft. 11 3/4 inch
Length: 28 ft. 4 inch
Height: 9 ft. 2 1/4 inch

Max. speed: 607 mph
Range: 1180 nm.
Armament: 4x30 mm. cannon
Stay tuned for another featured vehicle (and screenshots) in two weeks.
