Shuttle had a few things in mind when they started making their barebone systems: they wanted it to be small so it could fit almost anywhere, they wanted it to be semi-portable so you can easily move it around, they wanted it to be for many purposes, and they wanted to make it look good. Due to the size of the SS50, there had to be a pretty good design to make everything fit inside. Definitely, a standard ATX motherboard is out of the question and unless the entire package is well thought of, things would not go too well.
