BOFFINS AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY claim that they've discovered that the biological clock in all living beings is based on a single protein that alternates in a 24-minute rhymn.

James and Dorothy Morré, a husband and wife team pictured here, and who work at the Purdue University in the Cancer Center, claim that the protein sets the length of activity and inactivity within cells.

And they say that if the protein is altered, organisms will experience days of different lengths which can amount to as long as 42 hours.

James Morré said that he had been studying the biological clock since 1962, when different theories were advanced including the waxing and waning of the Moon to sunspots.

He said: "No one could prove anything conclusively, though, so the physicists had a field day arguing about it".

They found that cells increase in size periodically, enlarging themselves for 12 minutes and resting for another 12 minutes before growing again.

A single cylinder shaped protein molecule regulates the cell enlargement cycle.

The Morrés describe this as a "Janus headed" protein with one face handling cell enlargement and the other different activities.

The researchers claim that the breakthrough will have major effects on medical research, including respiration, response to drugs, sleep, alertness, heart ryhmns and a host of other problems.
