TU Wien "0wnz" Hacking-Wettbewerb

Das Österreichische TU-Wien Team namens We_0wn_Y0u , konnte einen internationalen "Hacking-Wettbewerb" für sich entscheiden. Die Universität von Kalifornien in Santa Barbara veranstaltet jährlich einen CTF-Bewerb, um die Coding-Skills von verschiedensten Uni-Teams aus der ganzen Welt zu testen.

Jedes Team bekam ein VMWare-Image eines Bank-Servers und Ziel war es, seine eigene Bank so gut wie möglich zu sichern bzw. Geld von anderen Banken zu stehlen. Zusätzlich gab es vom Veranstalter noch verschiedene Aufgaben zu erfüllen, um das eigene Konto ein bisschen zu erhöhen.

Am Ende des Contests eroberte das TU-Wien Team fast 12 der insgesamt 15 Millionen Dollar Spielgeld. Andere Banken wurden sogar bis auf 637 Dollar "ausgeraubt". Hier das Statement von "We_0wn_Y0u" auf ihrer Website:

It is cool to think so, but it is important not to forget that this is just a game. In such a large-scale game, some teams may get disconnected, some may have difficulty with English, or they might just have a bad day. Some may be good binary guys and they might get unlucky if no binary services are provided. Nevertheless, in the history of the CTF, we always made it into the top 3 so we are pretty happy about that ;-) Winning, of course, is fun, but the main objective is to train the security skills of participants. Each CTF teaches something (for example, we had some complicated exploits running, but failed to fix some standard simple config issues and as a result, some user accounts got compromised). The most important aspect of the excercise, of course, is to have a lot of fun..."
