For a 17" display, we think the 170W4P is a superb overall product. Seeing widescreen support on such a (relatively) inexpensive display is a great move in getting this technology into the mainstream markets. Movie lovers will love watching full-screen DVD's without any cut-offs, content creation folks will love the extra workspace, and those who multi-task like crazy should find widescreen support extremely helpful. After working on this lab report, and writing this text on a standard 4:3 display, I'm already yearning for that lovely 16:10 widescreen aspect ratio for my home PC.

Of course, when you throw gaming in the mix, things get complicated. If we were to venture a guess, we would say that roughly 15 - 20% of the gaming titles on the market will be able to use true widescreen resolutions. These would be the titles which base the game resolution on what Windows tells them they can run at. The majority of games have hard-coded resolutions which the game must be run at. While gaming on this display without widescreen support can certainly be done, it simply seems wasteful for such a beautiful screen. In terms of color reproduction and pixel refresh rate, the Philips 170W4P certainly has enough power under the hood to display images quickly and accurately.
