ECS has talked a lot about catering to enthusiasts over the last year, but the PX1 Extreme shows that the company still has a lot to learn about the market. The BIOS's meager assortment of tweaking and overclocking options is simply unacceptable for an enthusiast board, and I can't even begin to understand how ECS thought it could get by with such a bare minimum. A BIOS update could add more robust overclocking and tweaking options, and that has to happen if ECS expects the PX1's Extreme moniker to be taken seriously.

Of course, the PX1's problems aren't limited to the BIOS's poor overclocking options. C1E halt support appears to be broken, and we're disappointed by the board's inability to run our Corsair DIMMs at 800MHz with 4-4-4-12 timings. It would have been nice if the layout gave the PCIe x16 ports a little more room to breathe, too, and the board could use better x16 slot retention tabs.

Gripes aside, ECS does get some things right with the PX1. The board is stable at stock speeds provided you stick with more relaxed memory timings. Intel's Gigabit Ethernet controller offers superb performance. Viiv support could be handy for some folks, and the included IDE-to-SATA adapter is a neat little extra. Unfortunately, those few bright spots don't shine intensely enough to distract us from the board's problems, especially given the $163 suggested retail price. There are far better motherboards available for less than $150, giving us no reason to recommend the PX1.

edit: Ah, thx @stevke! Jetzt weiß ichs wieder! Elitegroup waren meine Skt-A lieblingsboards! 3 gehabt, 3 kaputtgegangen! :D
