The Asus A8V-E Deluxe VIA K8T890 board is priced at roughly the same level as many motherboards based on nVidia’s nForce4 Ultra chipset. K8T890 boards appear to be a little more expensive compared to previous generation K8T800 Pro boards and nVidia’s nForce4-4x based boards, but are certainly less expensive compared to nVidia’s high-end nForce4 SLI based platforms. For most, the decision will come down to K8T890 versus the nForce4 Ultra.

If it was up to us, we would choose nVidia’s nForce4 Ultra, as it delivers twice as much Serial ATA connectivity and at twice the maximum throughput speeds, as the nForce4 Ultra supports four ports of SATA-II/300, while the K8T890 supports two ports of SATA/150 connectivity. In addition, many nForce4 Ultra boards utilize nVidia's excellent Gigabit Ethernet engine and hardware Firewall, which the K8T890 does not have. That’s not to say the dual PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet ports on the A8V-E Deluxe motherboard are not impressive in their own right, but if given the choice, we would prefer nVidia’s hardware GigE with TCP/IP offloading.

Performance wise, we found the nForce4 chipset to be a little faster when utilizing nVidia's latest 6.39 Forceware drivers, but we're talking miniscule differences. Since the Athlon64 has an embedded memory controller, there are only small differences in performance between various chipset At most, we see about a 2% advantage towards nVidia, nothing even noticeable in day to day work. However, when you throw the "slightly better performance" on top of the better features of the nForce4 series, it's hard to find any redeeming factor for recommending the K8T890 over the nForce4 at this time.

However, the fact that we like the nForce4 better does not diminish the fact that the K8T890 is a very solid, very high performance chipset. We have no qualms with the chipset in its current implementation, although the limitation of two Serial ATA ports will most certainly frustrate power users, especially with the emergence of Serial ATA optical drives and RAID configurations.

The A8V-E Deluxe is a very good board, all around, and is a worthy follow-up to the very popular AGP-based A8V Deluxe. The new A8V-E Deluxe adds PCI Express x16 connectivity, another dedicated Gigabit Ethernet port (PCI Express based instead of 32-bit PCI on the previous generation board), PCI Express x1 expansion slots, and integrated 802.11G Wireless LAN connectivity, all for roughly the same price of their previous generation platform. We do not like that Asus moved to an actively cooled Northbridge (the previous generation board has passive cooling, meaning less noise), but this is a fairly minor complaint for an overall very positive design.

We like the K8T890, and it does exactly what we expected it to, delivering terrific performance and the ability to run PCI Express graphics cards along with Socket-939 Athlon64 / FX processors. However, it lacks much of the "umph" of nVidia's nForce4 platforms, which simply are better than the K8T890 in terms of overall functionality. Add in the fact that the nForce4 already has a terrific word of mouth reputation and is already popular in the enthusiast communities, and the delayed K8T890 chip may have a hard time getting off the ground and remaining as popular as their previous Athlon64 chipsets. Nevertheless, it’s solid and it works.
