It’s impossible to overestimate the importance of a console’s first top-selling games, as they both move the system into homes and define the personality of the product. Estimating the software consumers will associate with the hardware can be hugely predictive of what will succeed going forward. In compiling the numbers for this list, Next Generation used the following hypotheticals as true:

• PS3 will sell out in its first six months. It may be generous, but let’s assume Sony can get equivalent numbers of PS3s out as MS did with Xbox 360 – that means a maximum of 1.5 million PS3s will be out there in April. Our predicted sales figures are for this period; not lifetime.
• The attach rate of software on the Xbox 360 was about 4.5 in the US in April. It’s reasonable to expect the PS3 will have a lower initial attach rate due to its higher retail price and Blu-Ray functionality, which will probably split consumer dollars at retail as users try the full functionality of the machine.
• Given that, it’s fair to say that big-name games will sell just as well on PS3 as they did on 360, the bite of this lowered attach rate probably going to games with a lower profile.
• The PS3’s launch list has few exclusives, and with the 360 representing direct competition, it will probably split the sales of games coming out on both consoles.
