Hello,
forgive me for writing in English, unfortunately my German is still not good enough.
I live in Vienna and I just purchased a Sony Bravia television which has integrated DVB-C and DVB-T decoders. I've a chello subscription via UPC, with no TV option (only internet).
Here are my questions:
- I receive the analogue Austrian free channels (ORF, ATV etc.) through the UPC cable, but I cannot see them through the digital receiver (DVB-C). I see the programs list and guide, but all the channels are black. Shouldn't the free Austrian channels be available through digital too? Should I buy a card or something to receive them?
- Is it possible to connect both the UPC cable and an external antenna (for DVB-T) to the television ?
Thanks, and a nice day to everybody.

Hi, if you would like to use digital cable you have to pay a monthly fee to UPC und use their own DVB-C Receiver. (you can't use the DVB-C Receiver thats built-in in your bravia) at least you would need this: http://www.upc.at/tv/dtv_start/hth

For the digital Television of UPC you need their smartcard, which you only get if you have the appropriate subscription from UPC.
But even then it is not possible to watch digital Television without their Box. So there is no way to get digital Television the way you want to use it.
For more Information there is a thread named Was neues bei UPC-Digital.

you receive the free channels because the upc cable is an antenna.
you can't receive anything over dvb-c unless you have a parabol antenna with lnb

you can't receive anything over dvb-c unless you have a parabol antenna with lnb 1.UPC has a filter which enables the austrian programs, also when you do not pay for them. 2. Then you would be able to receive DVB-S but not DVB-C.

Thanks everybody for the fast answers.
When I bought the TV at mediamarkt, the guy explicitly told me that the integrated DVB-C decoder would have worked with UPC-Wien. Indeed the scanner finds all the UPC channels and shows the UPC guide. I therefore was thinking that I may have had the chance to watch the Austrian free channels through UPC.
So it wouldn't neither work with a paying UPC subscription? Why that, do they use a particular encryption ?
All this wondering is because I heard that analogue TV will be shut down soon, don't know how much is true.

If you subscribe you wold get a set top box, which enables the ability to watch the digital channels.
And yes, it has something to do with their encryption, it is simple not possible and the information was simply incorrect.

hello soprano! there`s (since end of 2007) no way to receive upc digital television with a built in (or free available stand alone) dvb-c receiver. you have to subscribe to upc digital television, if you want to get this product. after that a set top computer with a special smart card will be given to you. don`t worry, analogue ctv won`t be shut down within the next years. bye, ferry32 edit: for further information to upc digital television join us here

Thanks everybody again. A colleague told me he's receiving digital-cable with integrated dvb-c, but I later discovered he's watching cable-tv from another company in NÖ, not UPC. By the way, will they add Sky to the UPC bouquet? In that case I may consider subscribing it... ciao, Soprano

ciao, Soprano yes there will be sky with UPC but the UPC SEt Top Box is very crappy and the HDTV Box with skyHD is to expensive to recommend. Is there no possibility that you can install a Satellite antenna?

Is there no possibility that you can install a Satellite antenna? I hardly think that I'd be allowed to install a sat Antenna to the house facade, as I live at the second floor in a corner flat (it would be *really* too much visible). Some families at the ground floor placed few antennas though, so I may give it a try with the Hausverwaltung.
