So, what of its smaller, cut down brother, the GeForce 8800 GTS? For starters, it's actually quite surprising how large the performance delta between the GTX and GTS SKUs is, especially considering how used we've been to having true price:performance ratio kings released to the high-end market by NVIDIA - There can be no doubt that the GeForce 8800 GTX is the fastest graphics board on the market, and by some distance.

However, consider that the GeForce 8800 GTS directly replaces the GeForce 7950 GX2 at its price point, and it suddenly becomes far more appealing - Admittedly, it fails to beat that dual GPU solution across the board in raw performance, but that aside it reigns supreme in every aspect, from the size of the board through to the huge jump in image quality offered by G80 to bring a new level of fidelity to your gaming experience. Then, of course, there's the small matter of DirectX 10 compatibility, something which you may not need now but will no doubt be pining for at the high-end by this time next year.

At the end of the day, it's all about what you want, and when you want it. If you're a performance nut with a current high-end board, I can't help but suggest waiting for prices to drop and the competition to make their. If image quality is important to you, then you may want to grab yourself a GeForce 8800 GTS now, although high-end ATI board owners may be less in need of a big boost in this department. If DirectX 10 support is your only reason for an upgrade, again I would suggest waiting until you actually need such a board, by which time competition should be hotting up and prices falling nicely.
