Overall impression and Final words
Was I impressed with the Prometeia ?
Yes, I most definitely was. The temperatures and results put a smile on my face.
But what most definitely needs mentioning are the kind folks at Chip-con. They are simply re-defining customer care. I do not want to sound as a cheesy Chip-con commercial, but what is good can be mentioned, and I consider Chip-con the best company I have ever done business with. Emails are replied promptly, problems addressed at great speed, and useful tips are always readily available. The kind Mr. Steen Hansen even called me on some occasions to have a talk about how to improve the product in general, and to make sure I knew how to operate it correctly.
My unit came with a broken panel at the front, which had happened during transport. Some days later I got a new panel in the mail. It has been a true pleasure to work with these people, and I hope to continue working with them in the future.
All this is in very sharp contrast with my Maxxpert experience. Originally, I intended to include the MX-EVA3 phase change cooler in this review. I ordered a unit many months ago. Some time ago, I was informed that they have stopped to produce the units right now because of some design flaws. They intend to resume production when these have been ironed out. They offered me a refund, which I accepted because I did not have time to wait for them to sort out the problems. Only after many months of sending angry mails, I finally received my refund. And, this is important to add, it was only after I made it clear to them that I can have quite an impact on their sales. They also outright stated that they could not afford to refund anyone else this year (!) and that the only reason I got my refund is because I “threatened” them to go spreading the word on their unwillingness to refund me. Needless to say I cannot recommend this company.
Anyone who would encounter an MX-EVA3 for sale should walk past it. The failure rate of these units is 70-80% at a minimum. Almost everybody I know who owns such a device has had problems with it. Some have blown up and taken the mainboard and CPU with them, others stopped functioning and/or lost their coolant. And I am not even talking about the 30% DOA units.
All this has really made me a happy customer of Chip-con, as you can imagine.
Do I recommend this case to every one ? Oh heck no. You need to know very well what you are ordering and what the purpose is. This is a true die-hard cooling solution, it is not designed to be practical. It will be cold and it will work. This will bring you some of the highest overclocks possible, only dry ice or liquid nitrogen cooling can outperform it.
And those 2 methods are only possible for a very small amount of time. The price is extremely competitive, you really cannot make it for less money unless you want to compromise on quality, which is unacceptable as far as Chip-con are concerned, and I agree on this (with the bitter Maxxpert taste still in my mouth)
If you want to have the best cooling available, and you do not have the time, skill or know-how to build yourself a custom phase change unit, then the Prometeia is a dream come true. I remember looking at their website before they were selling the units, and it looked too good to be true. I was extremely skeptical towards the temperatures they were quoting, and because everything looked so great I was afraid to leave my credit card number with them.
But the bottom line can be no other than that Chip-con is a great company and the Prometeia is a great product. That is the simple truth, and I recommend this case to anyone who has good use for it, and does not mind to spend money on a long-term cooling solution
I wish you all happy overclocking
